I have a dirty secret.
I really really really REALLY want to eat dirt. Sand, in particular, makes my mouth water and I can’t stop thinking about it. I swear I am not making this up, and I’m not exaggerating. I told Nate how much I crave sand and he totally doesn’t believe me. He was like, “You mean if I brought you a cup of sand you would eat it.” I said, “YES, yes I would.” And he said, “No, you wouldn’t.” And I said, “YES I WOULD.” He said, “NO you WOULDN’T!” I said, “Well I wish you WOULD go get me some sand I’d really like some!!"
HELP ME!!!!!!
I’m pretty sure it’s the pregnancy. And this actually happened with Carter, too. I still remember, Jenna and I were watching Baby Einstein, the water one, and there was this scene with some puppets playing in the sand. Well, suddenly I felt this intense urge to EAT SOME cause it looked so good. It was during the last few weeks of that pregnancy, too, and went away after Carter was born.
WELL it’s BACK, stronger than ever, just in the last couple weeks, and I’m going CRAZY!! I think about it all the time. But wait people, it doesn’t even stop THERE. A couple other strange cravings have popped up in the last while. I was doing laundry in San Diego and got Tide out of the vending machine and oh my heck that smell... I couldn’t stop smelling it, and I SO wanted to eat it, and then I wanted to chew on the freshly laundered clothes cause it smelled SO GOOD. Even now, I want to go grab a bite of detergent... I really am NOT trying to be dramatic, I am being completely serious.
And THEN a couple weeks ago I was getting something out of my parents’ food storage, which is the cement area underneath their front porch. I opened the door and caught a whiff of that musty, cold, earth-y aroma and it is like DIVINE!!!! It was all I could do not to lick the walls.
Concrete and detergent sound awesome, but sand is #1 on my list right now. I think about it all the time. Nate's convinced I’m pretty much INSANE and making this up but I am NOT!!!!!!!! It’s the strongest craving I’ve ever had. But do you know what, I’m not alone. I totally looked up pregnancy and craving sand on the internet and yeah it’s called pica and tons of pregnant women get it. And you think MINE are weird, well here are some others women admitted to:
Cotton
Comet Cleanser
Fingernail polish
Paint
Baking powder
Car exhaust
Pine Sol
Vicks vapor rub
Lighter fluid
Gasoline
Permanent marker
Bricks
Sponges
Some think it means you’re lacking iron. Well guess what, I found out my iron IS a LITTLE low. The doctor says he's not concerned. Then again, I didn't tell him I was eyeing his potted plant.
I can only hope this goes away after I have the baby... it has to, right?

Oh my word!! That would be awful! And I was going to mention that usually its because you are lacking something but you already did that! Just eat a bunch of chocolate when you crave the sand! Hopefully it will go away or at least subside a little! Good luck!
hilarious! i had actually heard of this & ben & i made a joke out of it just in case it happened to me. i told him i would take up gardening just so i could have a reason to be outside making myself a literal mud pie & eat it without the neighbors always wondering what i was up to. i have heard that it's iron deficiency too & that you can go & get an iron supplement & it's supposed to go away.
or come on out to AZ, there's plenty of fresh dirt just waiting to be gobbled up!
I do remember being at Girls Camp and you and Sam were licking rocks. So I dont know if this is just a pregnancy thing Erika!!!
I don't know what to say....I hope the pills kick in soon. How much time do you have left? Good luck with that.
Try making Dirt Cups. You know, with oreos and chocolate jello pudding - maybe the texture will be enough to curb it a little.
You are so funny! Can I tell you that I'm secretly pleased to finally know someone who has actually had these cravings? I always thought it was an urban legend.
I was thinking though, what if you did eat just a little dirt? It wouldn't kill you, but I bet it would get rid of that craving for good!
maybe it's purely a family trait, Mr. Neil loves to eat sand too! maybe he's pregnant! I hope so!
It's totally true! Kids can have Pica too. So it's not exclusive to pregnancy. I have a friend who craved the rubber bike tires when she was pregnant. She told me she would walk down the bike aisle at Wal-mart to sniff the tires. I thought it was so funny.
Lol!That was a great post! Even my husband read it and we had a good laugh. I remember reading about Pica in nursing school. You're the first person I've met that's had it (or at least admitted it). Actually when I was little I craved dust sometimes. Our laundry room and shed were dusty. Sometimes I'd go in those places and lick my finger, swipe a little dust, and lick my finger again. It was so good. Brooke learned to do it with me too. Tasty.
Seriously Erika? I have NEVER ever EVER heard of wanting to put weird things like that in your mouth. EVER. Especially not washcloths, with their clean detergent smell. Or bleach. And would NEVER revel in the musty mildewy smell of a cellar or air-conditioning unit. Geez.....freak! lmao :)
Well, I guess everyone craves something different. I mostly didn't like anything with a smell. It made me sick. I guess as long as you don't actually follow through with eating sand or tide you should be alright. Carry around a dryer sheet or something and smell it every now and then. Maybe that would help.
maybe graham crackers crumbled up might be your best solution to the sand thing. Looks like it texture is a little different but it tastes better! I really think that's hilarious though lol
ahahahhah girls camp I remember that!!! I have been told that if you are craving stuff like that you are low in something....who knows....Thats funny, Good luck!!!
Erika,
you write the funniest things. I've been enjoying your blog and I look just so I can smile. and I see some of my most favorite people. the movie Neil made is great. and I'm sure a treasure!!It's so great to have talent related to you!Have a great day and stay away from sand. And laundry soap and musty basements and.......... love ya!
I am laughing....laughing....laughing my head off! Love this post!
OH MY HECK! I'm not pregnant or hormonal (I don't think..) but I always think that too!! Especially with the detergent!
