Nate, forgive me for posting this

One silly thing I love about Nate is the fact that he thinks he can dance.

I LOVE IT!!!

Cause guess what... he can’t.

I’m sorry, baby, but it’s true.

I mean, I’m not saying I can, because I definitely can’t. I still remember during high school dances feeling so dumb when the fast songs came on. I became really good at bobbing my head. Also, trying to copy everyone around me. I’m just not coordinated for dancing. I can barely handle step aerobics.

Well, I never saw Nate fast-dance at those high school dances either. No, I was never exposed to his “moves” until after we were married. It was our first Christmas together and we had pumped up the Christmas music while decorating the tree. And then I saw it. Nate was... dancing?

It’s funny, it is really funny. Ever since then he’ll break out his dancing moves when he is feeling especially giddy and it makes me laugh every time. Is it coordinated? No. Is it sorta geeky? Yes. Do I LOVE IT? YES!!!! One dorky thing we like doing together is interpretive dancing to songs from the radio and acting out what they are singing about. (it’s a good thing I got so much practice interpretive dancing with my college roommates.) Great fun.

Yeah, so last night we were watching reruns of “Gilmore Girls.” (OH how I love that show!) And I’m so lucky because Nate actually likes it too and watches it with me. Well it was the episode where they are having the dance contest. So while we are watching, I say something like, “We should learn how to swing dance.” And Nate goes, “What are you talking about, I already know how.” I am like, “No, you don’t.” He said, “Yes I do!” I said, “No you don’t!” And he said, “Yes, I DO.” And I said, “You mean to say you have been swing dancing before?” And he said, “I KNOW HOW. If you put Logan down I will move that table and show you some swing dancing RIGHT NOW.” It was like midnight. Poor Logan was having a rough time going to bed. But I laid him down for like the 4th time because THIS I HAD TO SEE!!! So then Nate grabbed my hands and I tell you we swung danced away. (Swung danced? Whatever.) Anyway... DID Nate know how to swing dance? Uhhhhhh no... not in the least. Nate knew he was making it all up as he went (at least I THINK he knew...) and he even tried to flip me and I thought I would die. But you know what, these are reasons I love Nate so dang much.

So there you go, even if you dance like Elaine from Seinfeld, it can still be fun!!! (In the comfort of your own home.)

Never a dull moment

One thing I love about having kids run around the place is the funny things I happen upon.

Like little spots of nail polish on my bed.

Because Carter was painting his toenails instead of napping.

Shoes carefully balanced on Jenna's bed. Hey if you have awesome shoes why not show them off.

If you're not sure where your oven mitts ran off to, check... the bedposts? It kills me, it really does.

The only good thing about these brownies was the frosting, apparently.

Jenna is keeping her carefully prepared menu fresh in the fridge. (I guess?!)

Why have "Welcome" blocks when you can give your dolls a nice seat.

So I've been finding all of Jenna's stuffed animals dressed in her clothes for a couple weeks now.

What I didn't know is they were all wearing her underwear, too.

Speaking of underwear, Carter got his new train at the store today because he's got the potty down pat now. That's my big boy!!

If you haven't noticed, he has learned how to "smile" for pictures now.

Today while I was changing Logan's diaper he peed and it arched backwards through the air right into his ear. Man, that was funny. Not for him. Sorry, no pictures of that.

I love being a mom.

Potty training= PARTAY!

Ha ha, just kidding. Believe me, I am not that sick.

YES I am potty-training Carter. This is not my first attempt at training him. I tried a few months ago, and made the decision not to blog about my failures. The good thing was that I didn’t put much effort into it. I remembered how things went with Jenna and couldn’t bring myself to really dedicate myself to the cause and then fail, so I just half-heartedly made my attempt. So every once in a while since then, I’ve asked him if he wants to wear underwear, and he has on occasion. He has even gone a couple times in the past. But mostly he would sit there forever and not go, and a few minutes after getting off the toilet he’d wet his pants. Then he’d be like, “Mom I want diapers. I don’t want to be a big boy.” And I would say, “Okay.”

WELL yesterday he wanted to wear underwear again. (The promise of a new train when he got potty-trained definitely helped.) And it was totally different. I tell ya, when they are ready they are ready, as I learned with Jenna. Nothing really changes, they just all of a sudden GET IT without me forcing it at all. (Okay, forcing it a little.) Anyway he did AWESOME yesterday!!!!! Pee, poo the WHOLE DEAL all in the potty, and only 1 minor accident when he couldn’t get his clothes off in time. I was amazed.

So one thing I learned about potty-training Carter: in the past I always sat with him, read him books, sang him songs, gave him candy, and he would sit and do nothing, then pee his pants later. THIS TIME he firmly told me, “Mom, don’t look at me.” So I’d leave the room, and as soon as I did he would go. Funny, huh! Couldn't do his business under my all-seeing eye? Yeah, I don’t know. Even when my visiting teacher came over and he was standing there in his underwear, she tells him, “Are you going on the potty today?!” He goes, “Don’t look at me!” and ran away. And when Nate got home he said, “Carter you are doing SO AWESOME!” He tells daddy grumpily, “Don’t look at me!” It cracks me up.

Another thing I learned about Carter that is different than Jenna: He doesn’t tell me when he has to go. Jenna would just tell me when she had to go and we’d run to the potty. With Carter, I have to just sit him on the potty every once in a while, and every time I sit him on it, he goes. Interesting. He also doesn't really care about candy and sticker charts. I mean, just when you think you know how to potty-train, after all I did it with Jenna, then comes a totally different kid and you have to adjust. It's kind of not fair. Why can't it be 1 potty-training method fits all, yaknow?

So after an awesome day, I put him to bed in his underwear. I didn’t want him to remember diapers so quickly, so I knew I’d just deal with the consequences. So when I woke up this morning and realized he didn’t wake me up AT ALL during the night, I was like, oh great he is sleeping in a wet bed. That’s how it was with Jenna anyway, she wet her bed pretty much every night until I said I can’t do this anymore and gave in to pull-ups at night until she learned to stay dry. So when he woke up at 8 COMPLETELY DRY, I ran to his bed to double-check, It WAS dry, I was floored. YEAHHHHHH CARTER!!!!!!!!!

I was on a high! I was like, this is easy! I was like, he gets it! He really gets it!!!!

Then he pooped his pants and did not say a WORD to me about it, until I said, “Carter it’s time to sit on the potty!” and he says, “I need help taking off my jammies cause the poo-poo will get on me.” ARGHHHHHH!!!!

Well, Jill, you said it best when you said, “You win some and you lose some.” Ain’t it the truth!

Things are looking good. Wish me luck... “Go Carter, go Carter, it’s your birthday, have a party...”

Oh Laundry, how I hate thee

Right now I have a HUGE, GINORMOUS pile of dirty clothes in the corner of my room. I can’t even look at it without cringing. That’s why I try to ignore its existence. Maybe I'd even sort them into their respective piles and start a load-- if it weren’t for my 2 laundry baskets sitting there ALREADY full, one overflowed with--could it be-- YES, MORE dirty clothes, sitting in the other corner of my room, the other basket full of CLEAN clothes, carefully hidden from view on the other side of my bed. Those clean clothes have been waiting for me to put them away for, gosh, I don’t even know how long, a week? Oh yeah, and not only that, I don’t want to start a load because guess what, there is ANOTHER load of clean clothes sitting in the dryer, so if I start a new load, that means I’d either have to put those clean ones away, or let the new load sit and stink up the place.

WHAT AM I DO TO???

Oh, yeah. DO LAUNDRY, MAYBE?!!!

Why is it SO HARD! Normally I do good at keeping up on the laundry. Lately though, I have no motivation. It's a disease. I just cannot get myself to put those clean clothes away. Which severely limits my wardrobe because half my clothes are dirty and the other half, sure, they’re clean, but they are super wrinkly now, cause I didn’t put them away.

Does anyone else live out of their hamper? Or even their dryer? Or just live in their pajamas every day cause that is easier?

Do I LIKE rifling through piles of clothes in order to find Logan's pajamas? Do I LIKE sticking my head in the dryer looking for some clean socks? NO. I DO NOT.

And yet... there they sit.

SIGH. We are all running out of clothes here so I better do something about it fast.

I know!

Go shopping!

Monkeys in pajamas

Here are some funny things the kids have said lately.

I cut an apple in half and gave it to Jenna, core and all. She goes sternly, “Mom!! You need to get the weeds out!”

We were driving somewhere and I hear this from the backseat. “God bless us, everyone.” I about died laughing. I was like where did Carter get that?! Yeah I guess Nate's brother is responsible.

We were looking through a Disney book and there was a picture of the 7 dwarfs. Carter points to each one, saying, “And there’s a hi-ho, and there’s a hi-ho, and there’s a hi-ho...”

When I told Carter that Logan was a knight for Halloween, I could hear him telling Logan, “You are a ‘night-night!’”

I just finished wiping Jenna’s nose when she goes, “Mom I had lots of snoril!” Gotta love when they think they know a word, but it’s not quite right!

Right after Jenna woke up from her nap one day, she told me, “Mom I had a dream Logan flushed down the toilet!!” Maybe we’ve had a little too much toilet drama around here. (Still gotta break it open!!!! It is waiting patiently in the tub!)

Carter was saying the prayer. He was repeating after me when he slips in so reverently, “And we don’t say poo-poo.” Can you tell what I have been trying to teach him lately?

Carter says to me, “Mom, I’m getting sick. I have a stuffy nose in my belly.”

We see a fire truck, sirens and all, as we are driving. Carter is absolutely insistent, and tells me over and over again, "Mom! There is the fire truck! We have to chase it! Mom, go chase it!" I hate disappointing him!

During Christmas time when we were driving in the car, Carter loved to try to sing along with the songs on the radio. He’d ask me what the name of it was so that he could repeat that and “sing” too. Now that Christmas is over, he still asks me the names of the songs on the radio. But, today he started telling ME the name of the song. So, John Mayer is singing, “Gone, gone, gone” and Carter goes, “Mom! This is the Gum song!” Then a country song was on and it went “Don’t I?” a couple times and Carter goes, “Mom this is the Donut song.”

Little things like this make me chuckle, I just love it, and I know I forget so many other things!

Things like this make me laugh too:

We had some unexpected guests for dinner one day.

Not only that, they were dressed for success.

I've left our friends there for a couple days now, just because it brightens my day whenever I walk past. :)

The New Year!

For New Years we went and ate yummy food at Nate's brother's house, then we just hung out at home with the kiddies.

Logan found the bowl of popcorn real fast.

We watched movies and we let Jenna and Carter stay up until midnight. We banged pots and pans. Carter liked it.

Not such a happy New Year for Jenna, she was exhausted. We should have been good parents and put her to bed earlier!

New Years Day Nate's family all plays Bingo and we win prizes, it's so fun. First the kids play their Bingo, then the adults play.

Good thing Jenna has 4 reindeer to help her.

My niece Haylee loves Logan so much, it is the cutest thing.

Then it was my birthday... Happy 27th to me!!

What else we've been up to...

Logan's been growing some huge honkin' teeth.

So for the last week, every time I turned around, Logan would just be standing there, balancing, looking at me.

If it weren't so cute, it'd be a little creepy. Somehow he learned to pop up from sitting to standing on his own. Then a couple days ago he actually took a couple steps. Can you tell this 9 month old wants to play with his older siblings?? I really can't believe it.

Then again, maybe it is a good thing Logan will be up and walking and playing with Carter... who is still dressing up with Jenna. sigh!

But, don't worry, they don't JUST play princesses together all day. They also turn our globe into fun spinning chairs.

And this is one of their FAVORITE games ever, (they come up with these on their own), they turn the couch cushions into a big slide down the stairs. I HATE cleaning it up, but one day I tried sliding down it myself, and guess what it was pretty fun.

Today we went to our friends' house and they had built a little sledding hill in their backyard. Jenna and Carter had a ball.

Hurray for the New Year!!! Here's to making up for lost income this year! And here's to running faster races this year! But that means I need to actually run again (i've been a lazy bum)!! Here's to getting Carter potty-trained SOON! Here's to getting my hair done so my roots aren't down to my ears! May it be a wonderful year!
